Here we have a 7 1/4" gauge GWR 11xx dock tank to the Dick Stocking's improved design based originally upon the well respected but slightly plain 'Midge' design by George Gentry. It's got the nicely shaped side tanks with all the tidy rivet detailing that Dick's improvements brought as well as all the other little aesthetic tweaks. It certainly looks like a GWR 11xx dock tank where a standard Midge looks a little 'inspired by' rather than accurate model.
The copper boiler, which was professionally built in 2014 comes as always fully tested and certificated and the bottom end runs nicely as you'd expect. They are powerful little engines these, the cylinders are pretty large, the walschearts valve gear is a capable gear, and the 0-4-0 layout enables the weight of the big boiler and all that water to go exactly where you want it through the driving wheels.
There is a pair of decent sized injectors fitted which is all you should need on a chunky loco like this. Lubrication is mechanical and fitted as you can see under the left hand side tank. All in all a great little starter loco to get you going in 7 1/4", and a convincing representation of the full size prototype at that!
As with most of our models, what you see isn't necessarily what you get! We often photograph models pretty much as they come in to us, and then when someone phones to say they are interested we pull the model into our workshops and make sure everything is tested, sorted and ready to go. So if you see the odd model photograph with a fitting missing or a return crank in the wrong place, that's just how it came in and certainly not how it will leave.
